Expectations of an Elite soldier
It was my last day in this house. I
had packed what little I required and what little that mattered to me. I
scanned the flat I had called home for about the last decade. I wondered if I
would miss any of that. Maybe the Static TV.
“Mum, I’m going.” I called out to
her. I looked around the house, my bag slung over my shoulder. The flat was so
small – where could she be?
“Lienn.” She called my name. I
always liked the way my name rolled off her tongue and I turned to the sound of
her voice. She was wearing a long gray dress and her eyes were fixed on me. I
was suddenly at a loss for words. A little uncertain, I put my arm around her
and pulled her into an embrace. It was somewhat awkward, because we normally
did not engage in such gestures. She hugged me tightly, as if afraid to let go.
I felt her breath on my shoulder as she told me, “Take care.”
